Classic Dungeons & Dragons ‘Gold Box’ games are coming to Steam
If you were a fan of SSI’s Dungeons & Dragons “Gold Box” titles during the previous century, there’s a strong chance you have great memories of them — and now you’ll have an easy method to play many of them outside of sites like GOG. On March 29th, SNEG will release a number of Gold Box Classics sets on the Steam platform. A customized game launcher, “improved” DOSBox emulator support, and utilities to help you move parties, plan dungeons, and generally manage your RPGs are all included in most of them, which are themed around their respective D&D series.
Forgotten Realms collections include one for the Eye of the Beholder series, another for the Pool of Radiance and Savage Frontier games, and a third for the Dungeon Hack and Menzoberranzan games. Fans of DragonLance will discover a special package for the Krynn trilogy, while fans of Dark Sun and Ravenloft will find their own special bundles. It is possible to purchase individual copies of Al-Qadim: The Genie’s Curse and D&D Stronghold: Kingdom Simulator.
If you’re a stickler for details, this may not be enough to please you. In addition to DragonStrike and Spelljammer, the catalogue does not feature any additional games that do not fit well into the conventional Gold Box format. As a result, because they aren’t remasters, they’ll be exactly as low-resolution as you’re accustomed to. Nonetheless, if you’re looking for a classic computer RPG experience without the trouble of switching floppy discs, this can be a good option.
