1.Make sure you have your axe ready.

2.Position yourself so that you are facing the tree you wish to cut down.

3.Using your axe, strike the tree three times (press A to use your axe, like most tools)

4.After the third hit, the tree will come crashing down and disappear, leaving only a stump behind it. Leaving a stump will always remain a stump; the tree will never be able to recover its strength.

One advantage of Animal Crossing over other games is that your character does not have any stamina, which is a welcome change from other games. You are free to cut down as many trees as you like. Your axe, on the other hand, will ultimately wear out and shatter.
