How to celebrate an anniversary

Published

No matter whether you’ve been married for 30 years or dating for just one, an anniversary is a special moment in any relationship. Traditionally, anniversaries are acknowledged once a year, and a special celebration occurs after a long period of marriage together.

However, many modern-day couples choose to commemorate more minor occasions, such as the anniversary of their first date, first kiss or first six months together. There are no hard and fast rules for what occasions should be celebrated, so it’s up to you and your partner to decide.

Here, we outline some suggestions for how you can honour the time you’ve spent together.

Exchange gifts

Gifts are a lovely way to show your loved one what they mean to you. The old classic of a beautiful piece of jewellery is the ultimate romantic present, and sure to make your loved one feel special. Consider something luxurious and elegant like a diamond ring or a watch.

Choosing a gift which is unique to your partner is also a great choice and will show them how much you care. Even something small like their favourite chocolates or bottle of wine will show how well you know them and remind them that you remember the little things too.

Create an experience

If you want to celebrate your anniversary in a memorable way, planning something different from what you usually do is sure to make the event feel extra special. People tend to remember the days when they did something out of the ordinary, so if you usually get dressed up and have dinner at a fancy restaurant, why not try a picnic lunch in the park instead?

Taking a holiday or even a mini-break is also a great way to celebrate your special day and give you some time to focus on each other, without the distractions of work and family life getting in the way.

Spend time together

It may sound obvious, but special occasions like anniversaries should be a time to be together. If you’re a new couple, you may want to talk about each other and your relationship together. If you’ve been together a while it could be a lovely opportunity to reminisce over past memories and look back over your time together.

No matter whether you choose to head out for a three-course dinner or stay in for a cosy night on the sofa, spending quality time together will help strengthen your relationship and help you better understand one another.
