Working from home and hybrid working policies bring a range of benefits to the table. You save on travel costs, you no longer need to wear a full business suit to work and best of all, you get a few precious hours of your time back. However, with so many distractions around our homes, it can be difficult to stay focused and motivated on company time.
If you’re finding your productivity is dwindling, there are plenty of things you can try to improve your focus and get the job done. From making changes around your home like setting up a proper workspace, to getting organising and planning ahead, you’re sure to find something that works for you.
Let’s explore some different ways to increase your productivity when working from home.
Create a dedicated workspace
No matter what kind of work you do, having a designated workspace like a home office will make it easier to associate that part of your home with working. Working in other areas of the house can be distracting and can encourage your work life and home life to blur into one. Keeping the two separate will not only ensure you stay focused, but will also help you maintain a good work-life balance.
Set yourself goals
Setting work-oriented goals is a great way to keep yourself motivated and focused. Ensure your goals are simple and achievable, as being too ambitious could lead you to feel stressed and anxious, which may have the opposite effect on your productivity.
Aiming to send that important email by a certain time or call two clients before lunch is much more realistic than completing your entire to-do list in one day.
Give yourself breaks
Many people believe that being productive means being glued to your desk for eight hours straight, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. Taking a micro-break, a short break from your work for a few minutes has been found to improve performance and reduce physical and mental fatigue.
Therefore, taking a few minutes to make a cup of tea and getting out for a quick lunchtime walk could actually make you more productive.
Many people struggle with productivity because they don’t have a clear plan for what they need to get done. Setting aside 10 minutes at the end of each day to determine your priorities for the next day will help you manage your time more effectively and make you more aware of any urgent tasks that should be at the top of your to-do list.
