How to Delete Instagram Messages

Even though the primary purpose of Instagram is to serve as a platform for sharing photographs, the app also includes its own own direct messaging feature. You also have complete control over which messages are kept and which are erased, just like with the vast majority of messaging systems.

There are two different approaches you can take in order to clear up your inbox of Instagram messages when it becomes too full. You can both erase entire conversations and delete individual messages you’ve sent.

How to Delete Instagram Messages

These instructions are applicable to using the Instagram app on an iPhone as well as an Android device.

Deleting entire conversations

1. Launch Instagram and select the icon that looks like a paper aircraft to access your direct messages. This button is located in the top right corner of the app.

2. While on the screen that displays the messages, tap the icon that resembles a bulleted list and is located in the top-right corner.

3. Select all of the chats you no longer wish to keep, and then select Delete in the upper-right corner of the screen.

4. Confirm that you would like to remove the talks from your history.

It is important to keep in mind that the other person (or individuals) involved in the chat will still be able to see the messages, unless they remove the thread themselves.

Delete your own individual messages

You are able to remove a message by selecting the “Unsend” option if you have already sent it but then change your mind and decide that you want to take it back. This will ensure that it is removed for all participants in the conversation.

1. Reopen Instagram and navigate to the message that you wish to remove from your feed.

2. Place your finger on the message you wish to retract and keep it there while you do so.

3. When a pop-up menu displays, choose the option to Unsend the message, and then confirm that you would like to remove it.

Be aware that while if unsending a message will cause it to be deleted for everyone, sending another message may still alert the other participants in the conversation that you have done so.

When you delete a conversation on Instagram does it delete for both people?

When you delete a chat, it will be removed from your inbox and no longer be accessible to you. Bear in mind that doing so will just remove the chat from your end of the conversation and that it will still be visible to the other participants in the conversation.
