Where to Find the Rancor

It should come as no surprise that the Rancor, one of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor’s most infamous foes, is not found freely roaming any of the planets Cal visits. The Rancor, however, lives in the depths of caves and pits, just as it did in Return of the Jedi.

The Sodden Grotto is the most likely location for Cal to encounter a Rancor first. One of the worst things about this foe is that Cal may encounter it early in his quest, when he is at his ‘weakest.’ The Rancor is at the cave’s end, which you can choose to explore or not. The precise spot is marked on the map up top.

The Sodden Grotto isn’t the only place Cal can meet a Rancor, though. Later in the game, a Rancor and a certain prisoner have a humorous run-in. Once again, the Phon’Qi Caverns’ lowest levels are home to this legendary beast.

How To Defeat The Rancor

The Rancor is, at such an early stage of the game, as challenging to face as Oggdo Bogdo is in Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. It has a ton of health, tons of unblockable attacks, and strikes like a tank if you’re not careful. Before challenging the Rancor, it’s a good idea to see if you can locate at least one more Stim Canister, which is easily attainable by obtaining the Mysterious Keycode from Doma’s Shop.

While the Rancor’s primary attacks are safe to block, he also has a devastating unblockable that can end your life in a single strike. The Dual Wield Stance is ideal for dealing with a Rancor because of the speed with which its assaults can close the distance between you and the creature. The Blaster stance is another viable choice, but you won’t be able to use it until much later in the game.

Swipe The Rancor will swing its arms around near Cal for quick hits. The Rancor will usually do two swipes when attacking, but both can be parried to deal some damage to its block. This is usually its go-to move once Cal has attacked it a few times.
Stomp The Rancor will raise its legs and stomp twice in quick succession, sending out quick shockwaves whenever it lands. The best way to avoid this is to jump away when its feet land. It’s best not to try and get in to counterattack too fast, but you can connect some lightsaber swings in the air if you’re quick enough.
Overhead Swing This attack is similar to the swipe attack, but the Rancor will instead bring its fists over its head and then slam them into the ground. These can also be parried.

When it comes to unblockable attacks, the Rancor just possesses one, but getting hit by it even once is enough to kill the fight.

Grab Attack This is easily the Rancor’s most dangerous attack. When it glows red, it’s about to lunge forward at Cal and quickly grab him, which results in an instant kill. The best thing to do when this happens is dodge quickly to the side and then jump in to counterattack. Once you’re used to this attack, this is one of the best ways to deal some good damage to the Rancor.

After defeating the Rancor, you can investigate its lair and discover Shatter, one of the most useful Perks in the game. This is a terrific early-game prize for taking down such a tough monster, as equipping it will increase the effectiveness of Cal’s assaults at breaking the enemy’s guard for the cost of two Perk spaces.
