The Basic Terms And Types Of Poker: What Do They Mean?

Published

One of the most popular games we’ll see at a casino is poker. Poker has been around for ages, and it’s been associated with pop culture from Lady Gaga’s hit “Poker Face” to the 2006 James Bond film Casino Royale.

We’ve even heard some of the terminology used and the different variations of poker available. While you’ll find a variety of the best slots on 32red, you’ll also find a variety of poker games. But what does the different terminology mean for these various poker variations?

The next time we step foot inside a brick-and-mortar casino or go to an online casino, we’ll know the various terms used in poker and the different variations we can play.

Common Poker Terms

Poker is one of the most popular casino games of all time because it’s an exciting game to play. However, there are loads of terms we might not know. So, here are some common poker terms and what they mean the next time we step foot in a brick-and-mortar casino or go to an online casino.

Ante

An ante has every player contribute a certain amount to a pot before each hand. For example, the minimum amount to contribute before playing is maybe a pound. Other times, it can be up to five pounds.

Blind

A blind is like an ante, but it’s more forced and not as equal. For example, two players to the dealer’s left may have to pay. One player will pay a “little blind”, while the other will pay the “big blind”. The amount is fixed before the game starts. This method is called blind because nobody sees a card before putting in a bet.

Check

Some variations of poker will let the players “check” the pot if they don’t want to bet any further. For example, if there hasn’t been a bet or blind to call, we can “check” and let the action pass to the next player.

If everyone checks, the round ends. If another player raises the bet, all the other players have to call the new raise or fold.

Raise

A raise is a bet higher than the minimum. Most games require the raise to be at least the size of the original bet. For example, if someone bets £10, we’ll have to raise it at least that same amount, meaning the next player will have to call £20.0.

Types Of Poker

Now that we’ve defined some poker terms, let’s discuss different variations of poker we can play.

5-Card Draw

Each player is dealt five cards. The players can trade up to three of their cards for new ones. The player with the best hand wins.

Draw

A draw is a variation of standard poker, where players can switch up to three cards with the dealer after they receive their first set. Then, the player uses those cards with the original set to make a hand.

Stud

A variation of the standard poker game, a stud has players put together their best hand out of the cards issued by the dealer. There are usually five to seven cards per hand. Card swapping is forbidden.

Showdown
