In Baldur’s Gate 3, casting spells is an art that can be used in a lot of different ways, but these powerful tools still have limits. There are two ways to cast spells: “known spells” and “prepared spells.” With “known spells,” users always have a set of spells ready, while with “prepared spells,” they can pick a few from a longer list to use in battle. This guide will show you how to make spells in Baldur’s Gate 3:

What Are Prepared Spells?
Let’s say that your Wizard gains 10 Spells when he levels up, but when you check his profile, you discover that he only has 6 Spell Slots at his disposal. This indicates that he must select six of the ten spells he studies in order to have them prepared for use in battle at any given time.
These six Spells are what your Wizard would refer to as “Prepared Spells,” and they can be cast at any time. Even though this character has four more spells in his list of studied spells, those spells are not marked as ‘Prepared,’ which means that he cannot use them until he swaps one of his prepared spells for one that is currently ‘unprepared.’
How to Prepare Spells in Baldur’s Gate 3
To change a Prepared Spellcaster’s prepared spells:
1. First, make sure you’re not in a fight. While you’re free to adjust your spells from any location, including the wilderness, camp, or even a hiding point in enemy territory, you must be out of active battle.
2. Release the character’s spellbook. You can get to this from your stockpile or the group view. (K is the default key) This menu will display all the spells they’ve learned along the way.
3. Your prepared spells reside on the top row of the Spellbook, beside the spellcasting book symbol. Your prepared spells will appear here; cantrips, which are not spells, will not.
4. To make a switch, pick a spell from your accessible spell list and click on it to remove it from the list of Prepared Spells.
5. Before diving into battle, make sure you’ve double-checked that your selections were saved successfully.
