Starfield – How to Sell Contraband

Published

In Starfield, contraband is a special kind of commodity as you cannot sell it to any of the typical merchants. If a space scan detects contraband on your ship or in your inventories, you risk losing your contraband goods and going to jail. Before you arrive, local authorities will scan your ship if you come to a patrolled location, such as New Atlantis or Neon. You can learn how to sell contraband in Starfield by reading this article:

What Is Contraband in Starfield?

You will eventually stumble across contraband as you raid the deserted research labs, investigate the random bases, and plunder your adversaries’ corpses. Usually contained in an eye-catching suitcase, these products are clearly identifiable by the contents. As seen in the above image, contraband articles will also have a yellow tag placed next to the name.

Stealed files, harvested organs, and experimental AI components are examples of common contraband. These things are usually very valuable, which makes it tempting to keep them around. However, if you don’t want to be caught, you’ll need to make sure you are smuggling them correctly.

How and Where to Sell Contraband

Trade Authority sellers are the simplest area in Starfield to trade contraband. Remember that each Starfield vendor can only have a specific number of Credits available to them at any given moment. This does not prevent you from selling them contraband; you will not receive any Credits in exchange. To get around this, sit and use the ‘Wait’ feature to bide your time for 48 hours.

Vendors should then update their Credits; however, if you have any timed missions, such as mission board assignments, use caution when utilizing the ‘Wait’ button. All major hub worlds and space stations have Trade Authority offices; the earliest are in Cydonia (Mars) and New Atlantis (Jemison). Under two UC Security guards, the Trade Authority office in New Atlantis is located in the subterranean Well area to the left of the Apex Electronics store.

You must descend via elevator from the spaceport area to reach the Well. The Trade Authority is located on the top floor of the main hub area of Cydonia, to the right and down the ramp. There are a few vending machines outside the entryway to indicate its location.

In addition, you can sell your contraband to various vendors on The Key space station, including their own Trade Authority trader, provided you join the Crimson Fleet. Since the Crimson Fleet isn’t in the business of upholding the law, you won’t be scanned when you enter its orbit, making The Key an excellent site to sell your contraband in general.

You can travel to a Trade Authority site quite early on if you need to sell your contraband somewhere else than The Key without getting scanned.

What Happens If You Get Caught with Contraband?

The ship will stop you and ask you to board after scanning you. You can always battle to the death to deny them, but it’s not really worth it, much as when you fight cops after you’ve been caught stealing. However, if you allow them to board, they will seize any contraband from you as well as any stolen goods (designated with the red emblem).

You have two options: pay the fee and have your illegal goods seized, or go to jail and forfeit experience points. Just as when you were caught with a bounty, one canister of Aurora got us locked away for seven days and cost us 1,000 XP.
